Matson Properties traces its roots to the early 1920s, when Russ’s great uncle, George Burden, founded the Matson Construction family business in the Little Rock area. This foundational period set the stage for the company’s future growth. During a time when many individuals were leaving their Arkansas lands and migrating north, Uncle George acquired farmland in the region. These strategic purchases laid the foundation for the family's continued success. During the 1970s, Russ and Lee Ann developed an interest in tree farming rather than using the family land for industrial purposes. Russ, a graduate from Clemson Master Tree Farmer Program began planting improved loblolly pines trees through the Weyerhaeuser Family Tree Farm Program. While seeking professional advice from consultant foresters like Don Bell and Pete Prutzman. They now manage over 1800 acres in the Wrightsville area and have been in the AFA Tree Farm Program since 2001. The Matson’s are involved in the Arkansas forestry community, learning about sustainable forestry practices in an urban setting. They are longtime supporters of AFA and active in various forestry groups especially Women Owning Woodlands. Russ and Lee Ann are using their Tree Farm for family recreation, hosting educational tours, and harvesting timber when needed. Their farm is a special place where they share fond family memories and have passed on their love for the outdoors to the next generations. Gold Sponsors
